Kolkata is a city of multi-ethnic and multicultural communities. Mughal, British, Portuguese, and French arrived in the city, which influenced our taste buds. However, the most prominent role was played by the immigration of Chinese travellers who brought their unique culture, fashion and food with them. Some of them came from Shanghai too. And that was what inspired Shanghai to start a jovial family restaurant in Nagerbazar, Kolkata, with delectable Pan-Asian cuisine, cooked with spice mixes and ingredients from the original China Town settlers. Today, we stand firm with 12 outlets in Kolkata and one in Hyderabad, loved by numerous enthusiastic and passionate food lovers.
The story begins in 1856.
Exiled from Awadh by the British, Mughal Nawab Wajid Ali Shah arrived in Calcutta's Metiabruz. With his finances significantly reduced, the royal chefs were struggling to recreate the experience of the royal Awadhi kitchen.
Necessity led to innovation. They reduced the meat portion in the light, aromatic traditional Awadhi Biryani and introduced marinated, petal-soft potatoes. The Great Kolkata Biryani was born.
Saltanat King of Biryani & North Indian is our love letter to the iconic Kolkata Biryani. It is also a celebration of our Nawabi heritage – the longstanding tradition of tandoor and kebabs, curries and salans.
